Earlier this week, American gymnast Simone Biles made headlines by withdrawing from the competition and prioritizing her mental health. Earlier this year, Naomi Osaka also withdrew from Wimbledon to focus on her mental health. It’s sparked a serious conversation concerning mental health as people go back and forth on whether or not these athletes did the right thing, with some believing athletes should have have to “stick it out.” The response from the media and audiences shows that we still have a ways to go in supporting mental health and combatting stress and burnout, both on the Olympic stage and in the everyday workspace. “We have to focus on ourselves because at the end of the day, we’re human, too,” Biles said, according to The Associated Press. “We have to protect our mind and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do.” The conversation surrounding our priorities does not end with the Olympics–we need to keep it going.
