Anxiety can be distressing and sometimes even debilitating, but for those with anxiety, more options are available for relief in addition to traditional pharmaceuticals. Elizabeth A. Hoge MD and her colleagues sought to compare the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction to escitalopram, a commonly prescribed pharmaceutical referred to as a “first-line medication for patients with anxiety disorders.” In the following study, Hoge and colleagues had 430 individuals in a randomized clinical trial with three treatments: two different doses of escitalopram or MBSR. In the end, it was determined that MBSR has an effectiveness comparable to escitalopram, and may be a great tool for those struggling with anxiety.
