Van Gogh, Goya, Munch, Kahlo, and Rothko. These five artists were among many to have believed to be heavily influenced by their mental health issues when creating great works of art. Van Gogh famously painted Starry Night when inspired by the view outside his asylum window. Munch was known for incorporating his emotions and states into his paintings, apparent in works like Melancholy 1892, or the famous The Scream. Munch refused mental health services for much of his life, even after falling into a deep depression, but after finally receiving treatment, his mental state vastly improved, a change reflected in his paintings, which were now brighter and full of color. The link between art and mental health issues has always been a popular topic of discussion. Art therapy has been a dependable treatment for years now, but even something as simple as trying to express yourself through art seems to help people in conveying their emotions.
