Self-care is about, as this Psychology Today article puts it, “identifying your own unique needs and taking steps to meet them…it’s provided for you, by you.” However, for people with depression, self-care can be hard to attain. There’s a neurobiological reason for this: depression leads to dysfunction in the frontal lobes, making self-care extremely difficult. Luckily, the article gives a few tips to create a self-care program for yourself, even when your brain is fighting against you. These include starting small, feeding your senses, and keeping a solid routine. Taking care of yourself, especially with depression, is hard. But everyday, it can get a little easier. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to reach out to those around you.
