Adolescent mental health has been on the decline for decades. The aftermath of the pandemic has left students from across the U.S. scrambling for mental health resources; the demand exceeds the supply, resulting in one of the worst mental health crises to date. School districts have adopted certain practices in order to serve their students’ mental health, such as mental health excused absences and hiring more counselors. Still, the problem persists.
The mental health crisis has put a spotlight on disadvantaged communities, namely LGBTQ+ youth and students of color, who are far more likely to develop mental health issues and not have access to the same resources as other students of their age. There is a call for help across the nation. Solutions need to be implemented in far more schools. The problem and its proposed solutions as well as a comprehensive overview of the student mental health crisis of today can be seen in the Washington Post article here.
